Netflix announces The Witcher: Blood Origin
On Saturday, Netflix announced a new limited series set in the world of The Witcher called The Witcher: Blood Origin. It’s a prequel series coming to the streaming service on December 25, just in time for cozy holiday viewing.
The Witcher: Blood Origin will be set over 1000 years before the event’s of Netflix’s first The Witcher series. The world of the Continent is still ruled by magic and elves, and the show follows seven outcasts from this world. They come together and team up to take on a mutual quest to stop an evil, all-powerful empire.
So far, the cast for The Witcher: Blood Origin includes legendary actress Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once, Shang-Chi, Crazy Rich Asians, Memoirs of a Geisha), British actress Sophia Brown (Clique, Giri/Haji, The Capture), and Laurence O’Fuarain (Game of Thrones Rebellion, Vikings, Into the Badlands). Images for the show revealed multiple other cast members will be part of this adventure, but we don’t have many additional details yet.
We don’t know a ton about what this new series will entail beyond the basic summary, but considering the fact that Henry Cavill left his role as Geralt for the main Witcher series’ next season, it makes sense that the showrunners and producers might want to take some time to introduce viewers to the ancient history of this world while they get the Geralt transfer to Liam Hemsworth taken care of. Beyond that, a lot of the state of the world we see in the first series is a direct result of events from the past, which it seems The Witcher: Blood Origin will dig into and provide additional context for.
