Future DC games will be connected to one big universe

The world of entertainment does like containing itself into secular universes, a way to make it clear cut what is ‘canon’ and what isn’t. It seems like the world of DC – regardless of whether it is TV, film or video games – appears to be no exception to this.

Indeed, in a Twitter conversation between film director and co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn and a fan, Gunn confirmed that the future of DC entertainment (like video games) would be contained to one big universe.

Answering another question on whether DC Studios are planning to create more stories that’ll add to the DCU (DC Universe), Gunn stated “Yes, most definitely, the DCU will be connected across film and TV (and animation).” His answer prompted another Twitter user to ask for clarification about DC video games and whether they too would be part of the same big universe. Gunn replied with a simple “Yes.”

What this effectively means is that future games under the DC label would be also connected to the one big universe that DC films and TV falls under. That said, as Eurogamer has stated, this seems to be only for future DC games as Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League falls under the Arkham universe of games, such as Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight.

Reactions to Gunn’s answer has been mixed, though one major worry that stands out is that gamers are concerned that trying to follow one big canonical universe will effectively tamper with the games that come out of the DC universe. After all, there are huge differences between the medium of film and TV and the medium of video games.

However, Gunn went on to further clarify that there would still be room for entertainment in the DC universe that wouldn’t be stuck to one strict timeline, such as the Harley Quinn animated series, as well as broadway shows.

Regardless, it seems right to assume that the future of DC will be a lot more linear than the past. Whether that’ll be a good thing or not for gamers and DC as a whole remains to be seen.
