Magic: The Gathering celebrates with 30th Anniversary Edition

On Tuesday, Wizards of the Coast announced that it will be kicking off a full year’s worth of celebrations through 2023 to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of Magic: The Gathering. Included in the celebrations is the commemorative and collectible 30th Anniversary Edition

The Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition is inspired by Limited Edition Beta – the first core Magic set that was released in October of 1993. The cards are not tournament legal, but are “highly collectible” and feature classic artwork from the early days of the card game, renewed for the modern day.

Cards in the Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition come in four packs of 15 cards each. Of the 15 cards, 13 are in the modern frame – one rare, three uncommons, seven commons, and two basic lands – plus one basic land in the retro frame, one additional retro frame card, and a token. Three out of every ten of these packs will include a rare retro frame card. These could include iconic cards like the Black Lotus, Mahamoti Djinn, or a Volcanic Island. In short, this means that some packs from this collection will include two rare cards, and some will contain two pieces of the Power 9.

In anticipation of the Magic: The Gathering 30th Anniversary Edition, fans can also order the “30th Anniversary Countdown Kit,” – 30 additional cards that will be available to pre-order for the holidays while supplies last from November 1-4. The Wizards of the Coast Twitter account showed off seven of the 30 cards already.

This edition will go on sale for the holidays starting on November 28, and will retail for $999. North American fans who order the 30th Anniversary Edition are expected to receive their order this year. Other regions where the collection ships to will likely arrive in early 2023.
