Big Chungus may be heading to MultiVersus
Just when you thought that Bugs Bunny players in MultiVersus couldn’t get any more wins, Warner Bros goes and files a trademark for Big Chungus. Almost as big of a W as Big Chungus himself.
The trademark was filed on August 26th with the European Union Intellectual Property Office – which in less fancy terms, controls a range of things such as toys, films, and clothing. Because of this variety, it isn’t exactly confirmed that the biggest rabbit is indeed coming to MultiVersus, but we highly doubt this cute chonker is going to make its way to films, clothing or toys… No matter how much we may want it to.
It is more likely that, instead of appearing as your favourite new T-Shirt, Big Chungus will become a skin for Bugs Bunny in the wacky, weird, and wonderful brawler that’s currently celebrating its first season across multiple platforms.
While there’s more serious characters like Harley Quinn and Batman involved in the roster, there’s also characters like Shaggy from Scooby Doo, who comes with his own meme-y skin Uncle Shagsworth. And, if you’re worried that it simply isn’t possible for First Player Games to lean that hard into meme material, please remember that Shaggy has an ability to transform into something akin to a Super Saiyan. MultiVersus loves a good joke, meaning Big Chungus isn’t an impossible concept at all.
As for what Big Chungus even is… Well, it has a weirdly complex background and one you’ll most certainly not expect. As a meme, it came to life after a very confused mother went looking around GameStop for a very specific game: BIG CHUNGUS. The picture shows an inflated Bugs Bunny, with the sticker ‘featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series’. All in all, a 10/10 meme, very good indeed. Unfortunately, the game was a total fake.
Yet even before Big Chungus hit the internet, the image of a chonkier Bugs Bunny occurred during an episode of Merrie Melodies, a shorter variant of Looney Tunes. These episodes were usually 3-5 minutes long, and featured a variety of different characters such as Daffy Duck, Sylvester the Cat, and, of course, Bugs Bunny.
It is in the episode Elmer Fudd’s Restful Retreat that Big Chungus appears. After a brief altercation with Elmer Fudd, Bugs Bunny impersonates the hunter by inflating himself to look more like Elmer. It’s a scene that lasts less than 5 seconds, but since 2018, has been part of meme culture in a way that’s had a huge impact. Especially if it ends up being a skin for MultiVersus.
