2022 Queer Games Bundle is now live
On Wednesday, the second annual Queer Games Bundle went live on itch.io in conjunction with the start of Pride Month in June. The bundle features over 500 games, zines, and other software created by queer developers, with the goal of providing them with a livable wage for their work on these games. The bundle is available from June 1-30.
The first Queer Games Bundle was created last year as part of an initiative to help queer indie developers receive the same kind of financial support that AAA developers get. “By changing the rules, we want to foster a bunch of small winners who get to survive instead of just corporations,” the Queer Games Bundle said in the text for last year’s initial bundle. “We need smaller devs to survive to keep this community colorful, exciting, and experimental.”
Those looking to support this initiative can pick up the bundle for $60 (the traditional price of an AAA game), or can use a pay what you can option which starts at $10 and operates on a sliding scale based on what people can afford. The overall sales goal for the 2022 Queer Games Bundle is $10,000,000, which will be split evenly among all of the creators who signed up to receive funds. Last year’s bundle raised almost $150,000, which was evenly spread between 200 developers and artists.
The developers involved in the 2022 Queer Games Bundle include folks from across multiple walks of life. Some are disabled, others are working full time jobs while trying to make their games, and others still have already found success in game development and are looking to share that with others like them. These folks have waived their share of the proceeds from the bundle to share with their fellow developers. All of them, however, are united in their goal to be paid fairly for their work and to change the way the games industry functions.
