The Sims 4 pronouns update is live now

Tuesday, The Sims 4 released its pronouns update, which gives players the ability to customize the pronouns of the Sims they create. According to EA and Maxis, publisher and developer of The Sims 4 respectively, this is another step towards making The Sims 4 even more inclusive for players.

“Inclusivity has been a core value of The Sims for more than 22 years, and the team believes diversity drives their innovation and community forward,” the developers said in a press release. “It was important to The Sims development team to get the pronouns feature right, and they worked closely with the It Gets Better Project and GLAAD to better understand the use and impact of pronouns and where binary representations of gender are present in The Sims 4.”

Going forward, players using the English version of The Sims 4 can try out the first version of the pronouns update. According to the press release, the team plans to bring this feature to other language versions of the game over time as they develop the support for it.

Fans have been waiting for a pronouns system to be introduced to The Sims 4 for well over a year. Back in April of 2021, a streamer called Momo Misfortune put together a petition asking Maxis to include pronouns in the game. That November, the developers announced that pronouns would be coming during an Inside Maxis stream.

“In January 2022 during the first Inside Maxis of the new year we’re hosting a fireside chat with members of our development team where we will share an update, including the research completed to date, more on our partnership with our external experts and the work-in-progress wireframes.” SimsGuru, a producer on The Sims 4, said about the research Maxis did on gendered language in the game. “Make sure to tune in!”

The developers have now made good on that promise for English language fans, and hopefully additional language support will be available sooner rather than later.
