Ratchet and Clank writer confirms Rivet is a lesbian
Sorry Ratchet and Clank fans that were looking for their hero and heroine to get together, but dear Rivet, a new character introduced in the latest game, is actually a lesbian.
This is no doubt terrible news for Ratchet and Rivet (Ravet, Richet? Whatever their ship name is called) fans, but this is great news for us – people with impeccable taste. Unfortunately, it’s never really portrayed or revealed in the game itself – making it feel a bit like a J.K Rowling (UGH) sort of reveal, but still, lesbian fans of Rivet are no doubt punching the air with joy.
As for where this confirmation came from, you don’t have to look much further than at Sam Maggs- the current Narrative lead at Wizards of the Coast, but the previous lead writer behind Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.
Not only that, Maggs worked extensively on the character of Rivet, making sure that the team didn’t just see the concept of a ‘female Ratchet’ and decided to go the easy route of making her a carbon copy of Ratchet but with boobs and the letter ‘e’ stuck on the end of her name. Seriously, that was just one of her many names before they decided to stick with Rivet.
And if you thought that look was bad, Maggs also made sure that Rivet wasn’t completely sexualized too – making her work being erased from the narrative of Rivet feel particularly damning.
Nonetheless, Maggs did not take her work being swept over standing down. In a few Twitter threads, she has highlighted the work that she and a group of other game devs took to make sure the Rivet we know and love wasn’t just a misogynistic caricature – making it clear that Rivet was a team effort, and not just the work of one individual.
Maggs also went on to confirm, via these threads on her Twitter page, that Rivet is “canonically a lesbian” – even tagging the official Ratchet and Clank wiki to prove her point. Of course, this confirmation from Maggs has been challenged by a few fans, particularly those who feel Rivet’s sexuality not being portrayed in the game makes this tweet from Maggs more like a ‘fanon interpretation’. You know, in spite of Maggs being a lead writer and all.
However, other fans took this tweet to ask a question that has been speculated and discussed before: is Rivet trans? According to Maggs, she has seen the fan-theory and loves it, but she did not initially think of it when working on Rivet: “(I’m cis and also stupid) but I am 10000% in support of it !!!!!!”
What this means for Rivet is anyone’s guess, but we can safely say that we’re eager to see whether she’ll play a key role in future Ratchet and Clank games – with a girlfriend in tow, maybe?
