New group Birmingham Gaymers launches its first event at Chance and Counters

A new group, Birmingham Gaymers, has come together to launch its very first event in the city of Birmingham.

For as long as we can remember, big cities have always had the interest and people necessary to bring marginalized folks together. It’s why the brilliant London Gaymers and NYCC Gaymers exist, and we’re so grateful that they exist. Now it’s Birmingham’s time to shine!

Created by Chris Brown, the editor behind board games and general geekery publication Polaroids and Polar Bears, Birmingham Gaymers will launch its first event at the board game cafe in, Chance and Counters. Chance and Counters is located in The Custard Factory, Digbeth in Birmingham, and is well known for not just having some awesome board games, but an amazing atmosphere, drinks, and food.

“Birmingham Gaymers is all about creating a safe space for LGBTQ+ folk and allies to gather, make new friends, connect with old ones, eat, drink, and of course play board games.” Brown tells us. “After spending the past 18 months at home due to the pandemic, many people are feeling isolated and have lost contact with old friend groups as they haven’t been able to regularly see them. Social contact is so important for our mental health and this new meet-up will hopefully alleviate some of the stresses of going out into a crowded place.”

As well as hoping to foster a passionate community, Brown states that with the violence the LGBTQ+ community faces steadily rising, it’s “more important than ever” to have these safe spaces.

While this is an in-person event, Brown has told Gayming Magazine that “masks are of people’s choosing” and that Chance and Counters have said, “they will gladly wear masks if people would like them to.”

The event can be found on Eventbrite, with it starting at 6pm and ending at 10pm. You can show your interest by signing up for the event and joining Birmingham Gaymers in what looks to be a lot of fun.
