QUEERZ! is a super-sentai LGBTQ+ themed TTRPG focused on empathy and love
Ever wanted to be your own gay Power Ranger and fight ignorance with the power of empathy? Then you’ll absolutely want to find out more about QUEERZ, a TTRPG from Amít Moshe / Son of Oak Game Studio that encourages you to be who you are, and let your guard down to turn your enemies into friends.
Over the years, tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) have gained a huge number of talented, LGBTQ+ creators that have made the space feel more welcoming and inclusive for both new, and old players that didn’t feel safe in mostly white, cis, and heterosexual groups in the past. Son of Oak Game Studio is no different, with QUEERZ offering players an exciting universe that fans of super-sentai will love.
QUEERZ combines the normality of everyday life with the intense, action-packed world of being a superhero. However, it isn’t just every day bad guys you’ll be looking to fight, but the ultimate goal of ridding the world of Ignorance – a dark, glass-like substance that infects people and prevents them from seeing the beauty and variety that life can bring.
To break through this Ignorance that plagues the people they face, the Queerz have an ability called ‘Rainbow Empathy.’ With this power they reach through to the Inner Space, a psychic dimension where they are able to interact with the person hiding behind all that Ignorance and find out what made them into a villain. Then through acceptance and empathy, the Queerz win the battle by transforming the villain into an ally.
This may sound all very much on the nose: rainbows beating ignorance and bigotry through glitz and glamour. But we can’t deny that there’s something appealing about stopping ignorance through understanding rather than resorting to just violence. Though that, of course, has its uses too.
QUEERZ uses the same TTRPG system as City of Mist – also published by the Son of Oak Game Studio – which grants players powers that are recognizable from characters in fiction, like fairytales. These are best displayed through the game’s use of a tag-based system, which offers player characters different things that enhance their characters. What makes this stand out is that no matter how mundane the skill might appear, it is equal in power and just as effective as your superpowers. So while you might have the ability of an ‘ignorance-cutting fan’, it’s just as important that you’re a good listener.
There’s a lot to like about QUEERZ and frankly we’re just glad that there’s another openly LGBTQ+ inclusive TTRPG out there, just waiting for players to get their hands on it.
Currently, the game is fully funded over on Kickstarter, but if you want to support the creator yourself then we recommend opening your wallet and splashing that cash. And if you’re still not sure, there’s always a playthrough of the TTRPG available to watch on Twitch.
