Queer gaming wins in the BAFTA Games Awards 2021

As anyone who watched our own Gayming Awards this year know, queer games have slowly but surely made their way into triple-A gaming. That has never been more apparent with all the wins queer games received during last night’s BAFTA Games Awards 2021.

The game that took home most of the BAFTA’s was – to no real surprise – is Hades, Supergiant Games roguelike game. Players follow young Zagreus and his bisexual ascent from the depths of the Underworld, where he’ll meet the Greek pantheons, and discover just who he truly is. Along the way, he faces enemies like no other and can even choose to smooch – and not smooch – his companions along the way.

Hades took home awards for Artistic Achievement, Best Game, Game Design, Narrative, and Performer in a Supporting Role for Logan Cunningham.

The other big win was The Last of Us Part 2, which received two BAFTA Games Awards for Animation and Performer in a Leading Role, with Laura Bailey winning her first ever BAFTA.

The Last of Us Part 2 follows the story of Ellie, who goes on a quest for vengeance after someone she loves is brutally murdered in front of her eyes. It’s a harrowing journey, but one that’s meant a lot to many queer gamers out there.

Another queer game that didn’t quite get an award, but was well-received was DONTNOD’s Tell Me Why for Games Beyond Entertainment. Animal Crossing, perhaps a queer game in disguise with how much the LGBT community are drawn to the game and making it their own, snagged the award instead.

With all that in mind, let’s just say that queer gaming won in the BAFTA Games Awards 2021 and, if the queer games we’ve got releasing this year is any indication, it’s going to do just as well next year, too.
