God of War’s original creator says that Atreus might be gay

There’s something in the air tonight and it sounds like the screams of homophobic gamers who can’t believe that God of War‘s original creator, David Jaffe, said that Atreus growing up to be gay would be ‘very cool.’

Let’s be clear: this isn’t confirmation that Atreus is gay or that Cory Barlog will make Atreus gay in any future sequel of God of War. The comment by Jaffe was due to him being brought in to clarify the possibility of Kratos being gay and as he explains, it isn’t something that he can make happen. It’s all in Barlog’s hands, now. And even if he could, he wouldn’t want ‘to retcon Kratos’ in the first place.

The last thing Jaffe had to say about the matter (on Twitter anyway) was that, in his opinion, there need to be more LGBT+ characters represented in games. As far as we know, the God of War series does not have any, so for them to include a queer character would be a massive first for a franchise that’s still so rooted in hypermasculinity and sexism.

It was then that Jaffe took to YouTube to explain his view and pretty much state what we’re all thinking: “if Atreus is gay, why would it ruin the franchise? The God damn truth is that under the surface they are homophobic.”

“My question to you is if Atreus ended up being a gay fella when he grows up, would it ruin the franchise?” Jaffe continued, “because I don’t really understand what would create a destructive force in a franchise because one character who’s a dude happens to like other dudes… it doesn’t make no sense to me.”

As to be expected, the comments on Jaffe’s YouTube video is mostly mixed. Some are very supportive of the idea of Atreus being gay, others hate the idea and some just genuinely don’t seem to care. Regardless, as Jaffe himself has stated, it is out of his hands is up entirely up to Barlog’s vision. Whether queer fans should be worried about that or not is another thing to ponder about entirely.
