Best family-friendly board games to play this Thanksgiving

Board games at Thanksgiving? You may think that you’d rather do anything else but play board games with your friends and family, but let’s just be brutally honest with you: some of the best fun comes from competitive board games and the challenges they bring. Mix that with some alcohol and great food, and you should be good to go.

Whether you’re new to board games, or want something different do over the Thanksgiving period then you’ll be pleased to know we have you covered.

Check out the full list of what board games we think you should be playing over Thanksgiving, below!

Disney’s Villainous

Ever wanted to be a villain, or rooted for them during your childhood? Guess what, you’re probably gay now. Hence why you’re here, right?

Anyway, the aim of the game is to first choose which villain you want to be – Team Maleficent for us – and try to out-villain the other people at the table by reaching your objectives. Each villain has a unique objective, so no game will ever be the same.

There are also a fair few expansion packs too if you want to play as villains like Scar and the Wicked Queen. Either way, you’re going to have one hell of a time playing this game.

Shot in the Dark

Let’s be honest, we all like a little Trivia now and then. It’s fun, and it keeps us on our toes. But what if you don’t actually want to answer questions about what the first number for the Beatles, or what the capital of Canada is? Well, that’s where Shot in the Dark comes in.

Instead of answering questions you may think you know, you’ll be asked the most unorthodox questions possible. Questions like ‘out of every 100 babies born in Europe, how many were conceived in an Ikea bed?’ You know, the questions that really matter.

Shot in the Dark is an excellent and fun party game, great for breaking the ice with new people and getting a chuckle out of friends and family alike.

Throw Throw Burrito

What’s better than eating burritos? Having a burrito duel, of course! Though we mean with these cute looking burritos, don’t use real burritos, please. Think of the mess!

In Throw Throw Burrito, you’re tasked with getting points by finding sets of three in the deck – all before anyone else can. But you need to be careful, because if someone plays a Burrito card? A battle ensues!

Declaring a duel on your friends, and winning it, means you’ll knock off points from your friends. All you have to do is pick up your burrito, go back to back, walk three paces, and then fire!

Just make sure you clear everything away first… We don’t want any accidents!

Dungeons and Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons is one of the most accessible tabletop RPGs to play, solely because there’s just so much content for it that no matter what you may want, we’re certain that someone, somewhere, has wrote about it. With that in mind, why not get your family and friends into this wonderful TTRPG?

Unlike the previous games we mentioned, there are a few books you’ll need in order to get started. You’ll also have to decide who is the Dungeon Master – aka, the storyteller of your adventure – and who are players – the heroes of your adventure. Once that’s decided, you’ll need to crack open a book and get planning.

It may feel like a lot of work and planning at first, but once you get into the world of tabletop RPGs, you’ll never want to go back!
