Animal Crossing: New Horizons said Gay Rights and There’s Nothing You Can Do About It

Animal Crossing has been well-loved by the LGBTQ+ community for as long as it’s been around. Just a search on ‘Animal Crossing LGBT’ can lead to a treasure trove of dedicated fans, theories on queer representation in the game and so much more.

Most representation has been hidden away, however. Or it can be easy to dismiss, making it one of those instances where you’re not entirely sure whether the representation is even worth mentioning at all.

However, thanks to a Twitter thread by sailormoonannie, that threadbareness seems to be a thing of the past. In the post, you see Annie’s character speaking to C.J, a loveable beaver who is gushing over his very talented partner. While it isn’t confirmed who his partner is, check out this post by Twitter user, LylaHammar.

Coincidence? We think not. And while yes, we’ve already heard all of the complaints about ‘they could just mean partners in a work sense,’ there’s no real proof that Flick and CJ are co-workers at all. One works in the fishing business, others with bugs. That and just…let queer people enjoy things!

But if you’re still not convinced, check out Twitter user taecrossing. They had a blast speaking to Merry, whose favourite comic consists of lesbian superheroes. Seems to us that Merry is our kinda gal and it’s the kind of casual acceptance that we love to see in our video games.

We wonder what other LGBT references Animal Crossing has hidden away. The game is still fairly new, so we’re excited to find out as more and more people play.

  • Stop calling people queer without their consent. I understand it’s a slur some people have reclaimed. That doesn’t make it acceptable to apply it to people who do not identify that way. Queer and similar slurs have been the last words some people heard before they were killed.
