8 of the Nerdiest Things to Watch on Disney Plus
FINALLY! Disney+ (also known as Disney Plus) has launched in the UK, Ireland, and five other EU countries, bringing us in line with our lucky US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and Dutch readers.
This is one hell of a treasure trove of goodies, and it couldn’t have come at a more perfect time as the world faces a period of isolation. To celebrate, I decided to pick out a selection of the nerdiest things on Disney+.
The Mandalorian
This one is worth the monthly subscription fee on its own! After the fall of the Galactic Empire, lawlessness has spread throughout the galaxy. A lone gunfighter makes his way through the outer reaches, earning his keep as a bounty hunter.
X-Men Cartoon
Yes, all five seasons of the awesome 90s X-Men cartoon is available in full! Worth it for just the awesome opening theme alone! Join Professor Xavier, Storm, Jubilee, Cyclops, Wolverine, and so many more mutant heroes as they battle a roster of enemies in glorious 90s animated technicolour!
The World According to Jeff Goldblum
In each episode of this new 12-part series, Jeff Goldblum pulls on the thread of a deceptively familiar object to unravel a world of astonishing connections and fascinating science and history. Through the prism of his curious and witty mind, nothing is as it seems. These “modern marvels” are so commonplace, we often take them for granted… but Jeff Goldblum does not.
We specifically love episode 6 which is an episode dedicated to the world of gaming, featuring an appearance by a friend of the magazine, Gordon Bellamy!
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Yoda, Anakin and the Jedi Knights fight in the Clone Wars, taking them to many new planets and introducing new players. Filling the gap between Episodes II and III of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, The Clone Wars includes an animated film and seven series, including the new Final Season which was released exclusively on Disney+.
The Imagineering Story
OK, this is one for the Disney Park nerds out there! Given unprecedented access, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker, Leslie Iwerks, lead the viewer on a journey behind the curtains of Walt Disney Imagineering, the little known design and development centre of The Walt Disney Company, to discover what it takes to create and build Disney theme parks around the world.
Star vs The Forces of Evil
Star Butterfly, a princess from another dimension, battles villains through the multiverse to protect her own magic which she is still figuring out how to use.
This series had some really great LGBTQ moments, including Disney’s first same-sex kiss, regular portrayals of fluid genders, and trans references.
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey
Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, this 13-part series is an epic adventure across the universe of space and time, exploring humanity’s heroic quest for knowledge and the laws of science.
Gravity Falls
For their summer vacation, 12-year-old Dipper Pines and his twin sister Mabel are dropped off from their home in Piedmont, California, to the fictitious town of Gravity Falls, Oregon to spend the summer with their Great Uncle Stan Pines, who runs a tourist trap called the “Mystery Shack”. Things are not what they seem in this small town, and with the help of a mysterious journal that Dipper finds in the forest, they begin unraveling the local mysteries.
This is a pick solely based on what is available now, there is so much more original content being rolled out throughout 2020, including the new Marvel series which form part of the ongoing Marvel Universe. You can check out this list from Forbes for a preview.
