Quantum Witch preview: a retro pixel art LGBTQ adventure with real humor

Quantum Witch is a new retro pixel art game coming soon which takes inspiration from classics like Metroid, Castlevania, and Link To The Past, with a focus on queer story and characters. Setting it apart from other similar games is its Douglas Adams-style humour along with so much fourth wall breaking.

In Quantum Witch, Ren’s idyllic existence in her home of Hus is about to be ripped apart when she’s drawn into a conflict between age old deities and, on top of that, has to do a fetch quest. In Hus, you can visit the pool, trade in the town, plant a flower or two, and be careful in the wilds after dark. Oh, and stay away from the mountain. Just stay away from it. Don’t ask why. You don’t want to make it happen again.

Quantum Witch is a really meta-inspired game that starts simply but starts to get really twisty, very quickly! No fourth wall is left unbroken as numerous popular games get name checked and characters become very AWARE of the situation. Every decision has impacts all the way through the game, puzzles are full of puns and the accompanying music is beautiful!

Happy to confirm too that there is a cat, and yes you can pet it.

Alongside the art style, the music and the humor, there are also lesbians. Many, many lesbians. Tall lesbians, short lesbians, old lesbians, young lesbians, cis lesbians, trans lesbians… all the lesbians!

Nikki Jay is the sole developer of Quantum Witch, with BAFTA-nominated writer Paul Rose providing scripts and aiding with character development. Music is by Christopher Jerden-Cooke and Nikki Jay.

Speaking about the game’s backgroun and inspiration, Nikki explains the game “originally started as a novel, putting my past trauma from religion and bigotry against queer folk into a form I could laugh at and explore. That was, until I found I hate writing novels. It transitioned to telling the story through a point and click adventure, until I found I hate the “use every item with everything else to figure out the mood logic” scenarios that point and clicks can so easily fall into. Now I’m telling the story in a fun, interactive way, where small choices have effects and every puzzle can have some kind of pun.”

Quantum Witch is scheduled for release in June 2025 and you can watch the announcement trailer below for a great flavor of the music and humour that awaits! Make sure you wish list the game on Steam NOW so you don’t miss out on this potential gem of a game that really stands out from the crowd.
