Wylde Flowers

Wylde Flowers is a farming life simulator game with a witchy twist, players stake on the role of Tara Wylde – a young woman who leaves her life in the city to move to the town of Fairhaven.

Our review of Wylde Flowers included plenty of different head nods towards the queer representation involved in the game, which goes beyond the romance options present within the farming life sim. Indeed, if you want queerness in your video games, go no further than the newest game from Studio Drydock.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Bursting on to our screens in 2017, Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn has been giving textbook lesbian vibes with fans reading between the lines regarding Aloy’s sexuality, many believing that her conversations were either deliberately queer-coded. While her sexuality is confirmed in later games, go back to the original now and check it out, you’ll enjoy it so much more knowing that what you’re seeing as grey areas, is actually a rainbow readying to burst through!

Unpacking

The premise of Unpacking is a simple one: you play as an unnamed girl as she grows up, unpacking her things and putting them into their correct place. There’s zero dialogue, with your only instruction being to organize your life and things per room. However, you are able to find out bits and pieces about the girl by what she has: a football, for example, a notepad, and a box full of coloured pens and crayons. She even has a Gameboy to show that she’s a gamer.

There is also a queer love story involved too, told through the placement of rooms, space (and lack of it), and so much more. It’s an incredible tale, so it’s little wonder that Unpacking earned itself the Best LGBTQ+ Indie Game during the 2022 Gayming Awards.

The Outer Worlds

In The Outer Worlds, players take on the role of space colonists who are lost in transit while on their way to the edge of the galaxy. When you finally wake up, decades later, you find yourself in the midst of conspiracies and political strife threatening to tear the Halcyon colony apart. It’s up to you to handle these conflicts as you see fit, all while exploring the far-reaches of the galaxy and meeting a diverse cast of characters along the way. Like many modern RPGs, the game also features romance-able NPC characters across genders, and also prominently features queer storylines — like asexual lesbian mechanic Parvati. There’s also a cow that hangs out in your spaceship.

Boyfriend Dungeon game

Boyfriend Dungeon

Boyfriend Dungeon is a queer roguelike dating-sim, full of sexy people. It has a great character creator and does seem to genuinely care about the player. You start Boyfriend Dungeon as an anxious, 20-something-year-old who isn’t all that experienced with dating. In fact, it’s heavily implied you’ve never dated before and your mother shipped you off to the fictional place of Verona Beach so that your cousin, Jesse, can help you find your special someone.

Before you know it you’re raiding dungeons with a boyfriend who can transform into a sentient weapon!
