Life is Strange: Double Exposure brings back Max Caulfield for new adventure

Life is Strange: Double Exposure was revealed yesterday during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase and we’re hyped that Max Caulfield, one of our favorite video game lesbians, is back!

We last saw Max in the original Life is Strange which wedged its way into every queer woman’s heart the moment it released in 2015. It told the story of Max who returns to her old hometown Arcadia Bay, and ends up gaining powers that lets her rewind time. Her old best friend, Chloe Price soon joins up with her to let her know that something is very wrong with Arcadia Bay, and oh, her ex-girlfriend slash best friend Rachel Amber has gone missing. All this while Max develops feelings for Chloe!

In this new game, Max is all grown up and is now the photographer-in-residence at the prestigious Caledon University. She discovers her closest new friend, Safi, dead in the snow. Murdered. To save her, Max tied to use her old rewind time power… but instead she opens the way to a parallel timeline where Safi is still alive, and still in danger! Max realizes the killer will soon strike again – in both versions of reality.

While we’re excited to see Max back, we hope there’s some work done on bringing more joy to her life. So much of Life is Strange’s exploration of the life of a modern day teenager, even with its supernatural twists, is delivered with a sincerity that has helped so many people connect with its characters, even with all the melodrama that comes with it. It’s why all its care put into the self-discovery of its queer protagonists is as affecting as it is.

Now Max is all grown up, we hope there’s more opportunities to see some adult happiness and safe spaces for queer expression alongside the expected twists and turns ahead.
