Patch 6 for Baldur’s Gate 3 brings a much-needed change for Shadowheart

After a lot of teasing from Larian Studios this past week, patch 6 for Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally here and with it comes a much-needed update for Shadowheart and her personal quest. It should go without saying that if you haven’t completed Shadowheart’s questline, you should probably click away now.

The majority of hype for Patch 6 comes from fans foaming at the mouth for new and updated kisses — it is Valentine’s week, after all — but there are plenty of other new additions that will have you once more clicking ‘Start New Game’.

One addition that I’ve personally been waiting eagerly for is the change to Shadowheart’s personal quest, and the player’s reactivity to it.

Depending on Shadowheart’s, as well as your own, choices, the Daughter of Darkness storyline can lead down two different paths: Selunite Shadowheart or Dark Justicar Shadowheart.

If you choose the former, Shadowheart will get the option to give into her parents’ wishes and sacrifice them to be rid of the curse given to her by Shar or defy their wishes and save them.

Regardless of which option you pick, your player character and Shadowheart will share a scene where she confides in you about everything she’s feeling, her hopes, her fears, etc. At one point, she’ll start to cry, and initially, you could do nothing but give her words of comfort — all while standing about 5 feet away from her and looking like a bit of an idiot.

Now with Patch 6, things are a little different. Instead of standing around, players now get the option to comfort their favourite cleric when she breaks down by giving her a gentle hug.

Players (aka me) lost their minds when you could give her a cuddle during the Epilogue party, but it was clear that there was something missing in the ending of her quest. While you still have the option not to give her a hug, for the Tavs and Durges out there who just want to physically be there for Shadowheart, it adds a much needed emotional catharsis.

Larian’s cinematic artists and animators must have truly worked their socks off for this patch, so a big thanks to them because now Patch 6 provides a unique way to interact with Shadowheart during the culmination of her quest.
