Cate Blanchett is sapphic bait in the new Borderlands movie trailer

On February 21, Lionsgate released an official trailer for its upcoming Borderlands movie adaptation, directed by Eli Roth and coming to theaters August 9. The video shows off this film’s star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett (of Carol fame amongst the wlw community), who is playing the red-headed, badass lead Lilith.

The 54 year old actress takes on the role of an outlaw who returns to her home planet of Pandora after she’s hired by a weapons manufacturer to find his missing daughter. Blanchett — who has played multiple lesbian roles at this point in Carol and Tár — seems to be following in her traditional role of a badass woman who’s at the center of the action.

Unsurprisingly, sapphics all across the internet are losing their minds for Blanchett as Lilith.

“Cate blanchett in borderlands save me,” one user wrote on Twitter.

“The world is not ready for cate blanchett in borderlands,” another said.

To help, Lilith enlists a crew of other vagabonds and misfits, who are played by Jamie Lee Curtis (Dr. Tannis), Kevin Hart (Roland), Ariana Greenblatt (Tiny Tina), Florian Munteanu (Krieg), and Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap.

The supporting cast is also very filled with stars, including the likes of Haley Bennett, Gina Gershon, Cheyenne Jackson, Steven Boyer, Charles Babalola, Olivier Richters, Janina Gavankar, Benjamin Byron Davis, Ryann Redmond, Bobby Lee, and Penn Jillette — who is reprising his role from Borderlands 3 to make a cameo in this film.

A Borderlands movie adaptation has been in the works since 2015, but didn’t enter production until 2020 when Roth announced he was joining the project. The cast and crew shot in Hungary from April-June 2021 and the movie will release in theaters August 9, 2024.
