Can you be gay in Granblue Fantasy: Relink?

Granblue Fantasy: Relink had the unenviable job of bringing over nearly 10 years of story into one video game. Not only that, but to do so in a way that reflects the inclusive and diverse world of the various Skydoms that make up the game’s world. With that in mind, we ask the question about Granblue Fantasy: Relink that we always do: can you be gay?

As we mentioned above, the Granblue Fantasy series has an expansive and often diverse world full of different races, as well as characters whose identities play a significant role in their personality and, sometimes, even their own personal stories.

For example, one of the more popular Granblue characters in the fighting game spin-off Granblue Fantasy Versus is Ladvia, a trans woman. Ladvia is confident, muscular, and comfortable with her body, and none of the other characters treat her with anything but the utmost respect. There are also multiple lesbian, gay, and bisexual characters within the game’s roster, such as Belial and Yuel.

With such a background behind the franchise, it makes sense why some fans wonder if they’ll be able to see more queer-inclusive stories and characters in this retelling of the Granblue Fantasy story.

Be aware that this guide may contain spoilers.

Can you be gay in Granblue Fantasy: Relink?

Granblue Fantasy: Relink follows the Grandcypher crew, which includes the main protagonist known as the Captain, as well as Katalina, Rackam, Vyrn, Rosetta, Eugen, Io, and Lyria.

Two of these characters, Katalina and Rosetta, have expressed interest in the same sex before and do so in-game, though both instances are very blink-and-you’ll-miss-it. For Rosetta, her bio profile lists her likes as being ‘Attractive people (regardless of gender)’.

In-game (mostly during combat actions like healing), Rosetta flirts with both Rackam and Katalina, with the latter responding positively that “flattery will get you everywhere.” However, the flirtation between these characters does not go anywhere serious.

As for Katalina, the Granblue Fantasy RPG mobile game has often had both men and women hit on her throughout the various side stories and chapters. While she has never responded favourably to either, largely due to her inexperience with romance in general, her relationships with both Vira and Lowain can easily be seen as romantic in nature. And, as aforementioned, she does have a flirtatious interaction with Rosetta.

There’s also the Captain and the relationship they share with the mysterious Lyria. At the beginning of the game, players get the opportunity to choose whether they want to play as the male avatar, Gran, or the female avatar, Djeeta. As far as I’ve been able to tell during my playthrough, the relationship between Lyria and the Captain — regardless of gender — can be seen as romantic in nature, but the story of Granblue Fantasy acknowledges it more as platonic soulmates. Sorry shippers.

That said, you’re able to recruit several different characters through the use of Crewmate Cards. One such character is Cagliostro, a talented — but extremely narcissistic mage. Her talent in alchemy is second to none. Cagliostro’s bio states she started her life as a boy, but in her search for absolute cuteness, she often regularly replaces her body with new vessels, this is just her latest form. The game never misgenders her, which is the bare minimum, but it’s still very nice to be able beat up god as a trans girl. You rarely see it!
