The first Overwatch 2 anime short is now live

On Thursday, Blizzard released a the first short for its three-part Overwatch 2 anime series, GENESIS. This short is called GENESIS — PART ONE: DAWN and it introduces us to Dr. Mina Liao and the events that led up to the devastating Omnic Crisis.

In the Overwatch universe, Omnics are the sentient robots (like Zenyatta) that came about from global research on AI. Over time, technological advances made it so society had AI running things to make life easier for humans. But as is often the case with scientific advancement, people’s hubris seems to have gotten in the way.

Though the AI were doing well, the company that created Omnics, Omnica, hired a scientist named Dr. Mina Liao to improve them even further. The implication of the short is that Dr. Liao’s work on the robots that were already “perfect” is what directly led to the Omnic Crisis.

Presumably, the full Overwatch 2 anime will get into the nitty gritty details of what happened with Dr. Liao’s work and how it led to the war between organic and synthetic life in this universe. The teaser also included a graphic for the upcoming PvE story missions that are coming to the actual game of Overwatch 2 next month, indicating that the anime’s storyline and this new in-game narrative content will likely directly tie into each other.

We don’t know when the next two parts of the Overwatch 2 GENESIS anime will release yet, but based on the implied connection with the Invasion content coming out, we can safely assume the next episode will probably come out after the new story missions release. The anime will likely serve to hold fans over for the rest of the year in terms of lore, since a producer already confirmed that there won’t be any additional story content coming to Overwatch 2 in-game this year.
