Warner Bros. Games reveals Mortal Kombat 1

Today Warner Bros. Games announced Mortal Kombat 1 – a brand, spanking new title in the Mortal Kombat video game series.

The past 30 years since the game’s debut has been full of spin-offs, crazy Kombat moves and cameos that you (and we) definitely didn’t see coming. That seems to have all come to ahead in the previous game, leaving many wondering what NetherRealm Studios could possibly do next.

The answer is this: a reborn Mortal Kombat universe created by Fire God Liu Kang, which will feature reimagined versions of iconic characters such as LGBTQ+ icon Mileena, as well as Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and more. These character reimaginings have been described as something fans have “never been seen before.” Let’s hope that doesn’t mean we’ll be losing representation instead of gaining it this time around. We’re just saying.

Mortal Kombat 1 will come alongside new features, as well as old, such as Story Mode returning with unexpected twists on classic rivalries and original backstories. The game will also introduce Kameo Fights, a roster of unique partner characters who can assist you during matches.

“With Mortal Kombat 1 we are bringing a reimagined universe to the legendary franchise which has captivated gamers for more than 30 years and continues to top itself,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “The talented team at NetherRealm Studios continues to push the series forward in bold ways that have consistently expanded the global audience, and we believe Mortal Kombat 1 will continue to attract new players as well as thrill our core fans.”

Tomorrow, May 19, the new game will be available to pre-order. Those who do pre-order will be guaranteed access to the game’s beta, which will be accessible sometime in August 2023.

Mortal Kombat 1 is scheduled to release for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 19, 2023.
