Tako no Himitsu: Ocean of Secrets is an RPG tribute to the GBA era

If you were a fan of Golden Sun or any other action RPGs back in the glory days of the Game Boy Advance, Tako no Himitsu: Ocean of Secrets may be just the game to watch out for.

Deneos, a game company created by Christophe Galati, has but one goal: to create great adventure games that pay homage to the classical eras of gaming, but with more modern and personal stories. Their previous game, Save me Mr Tako! followed Tako, a helpful octopus who rescues a woman from drowning. After a fairy sees his actions, they grant him the ability to survive on land – giving him ample opportunity to ease the conflicts between humans and octopi.

The original game had a happy ending, however, it looks as though the spiritual successor Tako no Himitsu won’t necessarily follow the previously established ending. In fact, it is summarized in the press release that players will need to “embark on a quest to face traumas and secrets to save a world consumed by the shadows of its past.” Sounds a tad foreboding if you ask us…

Players will take on the role of 6 different characters and uncover their stories, all the while exploring a troubled world beset by shadow monsters. During their adventure, they’ll discover the truth of the Shadow War, meet memorable characters, and (hopefully) restore light to a world that has long been cast in darkness.

Features include real-time combat, where players will need to adapt to the enemies they come across and gain an advantage through their tactical wiles, and brand-new equipment and items.

Thanks to an interview with Christophe Galati and Destructoid, we also know that Tako no Himitsu will have queer representation in main character, Karan. “I already put some queer representation in Save me Mr. Tako!,” Galati explained, referring to the character Evan, drag queens, and the queer-inclusive city of Ydor, “but I want to go a step further this time with a queer main character as I think it’s important to do my part in representation, especially with everything that is happening right now.”

“I stayed in touch with many drag artists from all over the world in order to portray the drag scene properly in Tako no Himitsu. Karan was also inspired by people I dated in my life, he will be very important in the story.”

Currently, the development team is planning to launch a Kickstarter for the game later this Summer, with a full PC release scheduled for 2025.
