Tea house visual novel Kabaret releases April 5
Kabaret — a visual novel inspired by southeast Asian folklore from Malaysian studio Persona Theory Games — officially has a release date, Wednesday, April 5. The game will be available on PC via itch.io, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, and Xbox systems.
Kabaret is about a cursed boy named Jebat who is uprooted from his small hometown and taken into a “mystical, violent, and unforgiving monster realm.” Upon arriving in this realm — called Alam Bunian — Jebat is alone and vulnerable, until he’s taken in by the owner of a mystical tea house called Kabaret. They are known only as The Caretaker, but they are charismatic and kind, and set Jebat on the path of performing tea ceremonies for patrons to try to gather information about how to break his curse. As Jebat works at Kabaret and tries to find out the truth behind his curse, he will encounter monsters of all kinds, both human and supernatural.
Aside from this game, Persona Theory Games is also working on a few other upcoming projects based in Malaysia. One of these is The Lonely Hearts Petshop, a game where players help a pet shop in Jonker Street, Malacca, run by anthropomorphic cats match up animals with the perfect home. Another is Project Half Light, which is about a student journalist looking to find the truth about the disappearance of a classmate she spread rumors about in the past. Players should note that is game deals with issues of gendered and sexual violence, so player discretion is advised.
Those looking to check out Persona Theory Games’ next project will be able to this week, when supernatural, Southeast Asian folklore-inspired visual novel Kabaret launches on Xbox and PC via itch.io, Steam, The Epic Games Store on Wednesday, April 5.
