The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX is a Persona 5 parody coming this year
The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX is “personal project that has spun wildly out of control in collaboration with my close programmer colleague, Chris Lindgren,” according to developer Joey Pagano. The game has taken the mechanics of Atlus’ Persona 5 and applied them to the context of classic American sitcom about elderly women, The Golden Girls. It is scheduled to release for free during the 2023 winter holiday season.
“What started as a joke has quickly spiraled into a playground of ideas meant to explore just how much we can push our skills and retain our sanity with our own brand of humor,” Pagano wrote on the game’s website. “There is no reason for why we used that coat of paint other than ‘how far can we take this joke.’ I hope you find it even slightly as funny as we do.”
There seems to be influence from across the Persona series in this game, beyond just the mechanics taken from its fifth entry that are mentioned in the description. Many of the UI features and portraits seem to be based more on Persona 3 and 4. Beyond that, the game also seems to include a dodge rolling feature for some reason, despite neither property containing them.
According the website, a playable demo for The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX was supposed to come out in 2021, but it doesn’t look like it ever released. Considering this is a free parody game that is likely straddling the line of copyright infringement, this isn’t necessarily surprising.
PC Gamer recently found and reported on this game, which combined with its relatively new Twitter account will hopefully provide further updates about The Golden Girls Take Manhattan DX as we get closer to the 2023 holidays.
