On Friday, Deadline reported that Heartstopper star Kit Connor will play the lead role in upcoming mystery-horror film, One of Us. The project will start filming later this month in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Connor will be joined by Callum Woodhouse (The Durrells), Charlotte Hope (The Spanish Princess), Siobhan Fallon-Hogan (Rushed) and Ian Beattie (Game Of Thrones) in the cast of One of Us. The film is about a family who begin one by one while attending a funeral. Connor plays the youngest member of the family who has to try to figure out who the stranger in their midst is, before it’s too late. It was written and directed by Stefan van de Graaff, who is making his debut in both fields with this film. Bianca Cline, who previously worked on Oscar-nominated Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, will also be part of the team as the director of photography.
Connor is best known for his appearances in His Dark Materials, and, of course, LGBTQ+ teen romance series Heartstopper, which was adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels. He captured many fans’ hearts as sensitive rugby jock Nick Nelson, and will reprise that role this year for the show’s second season. It will continue the love story between Nick and Joe Locke’s Charlie, but will also further flesh out the other characters in their friend group and larger school environment.
Despite the beloved status of Hearstopper and its two main characters, there has been a decent amount of controversy surrounding the actors who play them. Both have faced extreme scrutiny about their sexualities online, with Connor feeling the need to come out publicly as bisexual in the face of “queerbaiting” allegations, and Locke openly condemning adults speculating about his sexuality and love life as an 18 year-old.
Even with these challenges, both young actors are making headway in their careers, and we can expect to see them in plenty of projects beyond Heartstopper, like One of Us and Agatha Coven of Chaos.
