Wizards of the Coast cancels Dungeons and Dragons video games

Wizards of the Coast has scaled back its ambitions for the tabletop series Dungeons and Dragons, cancelling at least five video game projects.

Originally reported by Bloomberg, a spokesman of the wildly popular tabletop series made a statement to the site about how Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast is still “committed to using digital games.” The company has also made some changes to their “long-term portfolio” in order to focus on games that, as quoted by the spokesperson, are “strategically aligned with developing our existing brands and those which show promise in expanding or engaging our audience in new ways.”

Several Dungeons and Dragons video games have come out over the past few years, such as Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance which, despite featuring several well-known characters such as Drizzt, unfortunately performed rather poorly. Some, like Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3, have done the exact opposite – already forming a popular and active community thanks to early access. It helps that, after waiting eagerly, the game is set to release sometime in August 2023.

According to Bloomberg, these cancellations will leave fewer than 15 people affected but has shaken up studios such as Otherside Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment. Both studios were working on Dungeons and Dragons video games for Wizards of the Coast.

Ex-employees will get the opportunity to apply to new roles within the company, the spokesman for Wizards of the Coast informed Bloomberg.

In other Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro news, Pride Across The Multiverse, a Magic the Gathering Secret Lair drop from Wizards of the Coast, has earned and donated just a little over $1.3 million to The Trevor Project.
