ROLLER DRAMA gets new gameplay trailer
On Tuesday, Italian indie studio Open Lab Games (who previously released Football Drama) released a new gameplay trailer for its upcoming roller derby visual novel/sports management sim, ROLLER DRAMA. The game is coming to PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android in early 2023, with releases on PlayStation and Xbox consoles planned for later on.
In ROLLER DRAMA, players take on the role of Joan to lead a roller derby team to victory by using strategy and real-time controls to win matches. But it’s not just gameplay you’ll have to worry about. Outside of the skating rink, players have to manage five big personalities — Anne, Portia, Lily, Cordelia, and Juliet– as they grapple with the struggles of day to day life, like friendship, heartbreak, and the gradual collapse of late capitalist society. The choices you make and the way matches turn out will impact how your game goes and the ending you ultimately get.
Matches will use arcade-inspired, real-time controls that players will have to master in order to taste roller derby victory. That said, the developers have noted on the game’s Steam page that this is not a roller derby simulator. According to Open Lab Games: “match gameplay is inspired by Roller Derby but it then defines its own kind of game.” When you’re not practicing or running official matches, you’ll have to deal with the dystopia you live in and the constant surveillance you, your players, and the rest of the world are put under in this society. That’s not to mention the social and political upheavals you’ll likely face.
Roller Drama will be skating its way onto PC, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android in early 2023, with console releases on Xbox and PlayStation planned for sometime after. Fans looking forward to the game can wishlist it on Steam to keep up to date on its release.
