Can you be gay in Pentiment?

Pentiment is the new murder mystery adventure game from Obsidian and Xbox Game Studios. It follows a journeyman artist who illustrates manuscripts named Andreas as he tries to finish up the last steps to become a master artisan. To this end, he’s working in an abbey to help with manuscript commissions while he wraps up his own masterpiece. But as he’s coming to the end of his term here, Andreas finds himself having to solve a nobleman’s murder in order to save his mentor.

To solve the murder, and uncover plenty of other secrets in the fictional European town of Tassing and the Kiersau abbey, you have to explore the areas, talk to people, and solve environmental puzzles to gather evidence. How you go about this matters to the actual story and what ultimately happens to Andreas and those around him. Because of all this talking and snooping, Andreas builds several relationships over the course of the game, so the question becomes: Can you be gay?

Can you be gay in Pentiment?

The short answer is no, Andreas does not appear to have any opportunities to engage in queer relationships during the story of Pentiment. That said, there are still queer relationships you can bear witness to in the game, if you know where to look. Spoilers for Pentiment ahead.

The main textual queer relationship we see in this game is between two of the monks at the Kiersau abbey, Brother Mathieu and Brother Rudeger. If you find the secret passageway into the library and go there at night, you will witness the two kissing and doing…other things off-screen.

Additionally, there are implications that the peasant women Veronica and Brigita are in a secret relationship. Many of the other townspeople make jokes about how close the two are. Additionally, when Andreas returns to Tassing for the second time, he can have a conversation with Brigita (if you pass a speech check) where she mentions that her husband Martin is a decent guy because of the way he works for their family, and the fact that he lets her go see Veronica as much as she wants to.
