Lollipop Chainsaw remake set to release in 2023

In news that we only vaguely saw coming, Lollipop Chainsaw is getting a remake – and it’s set to release sometime in 2023.

Lollipop Chainsaw slashed its way onto consoles PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012, introducing players to a new zombie-slayer protagonist that was very different from the others you’d find in Dead Rising and Left 4 Dead. Instead of the gruff, gun-touting white guy with a chip on his shoulder, players took on the role of Juliet Starling, a cheerleader that’s voiced by Tara Strong and wields a gigantic chainsaw.

As reported by IGN, the Lollipop Chainsaw remake will be led by the game’s original producer, Yoshimi Yasuda, and will be developed by a “combination of development staff from the original version, including Yasuda as a producer”. The remake will also be worked on by development staff from the new publisher, Dragami Games.

The remake is said to have the aim of recreating the original, but there will be some “key differences” due to both the new-gen hardware of Xbox and PlayStation, as well as the fact that the original game’s 16 licensed tracks may not all be there. “Aside from a few licensed tracks, the soundtrack will consist of new music,” IGN reports.

As for why the Lollipop Chainsaw remake is happening, it seems the reason lies at the feet of the lack of accessibility to playing the game. It is one of the very few games that’s not able to be played through Microsoft’s backwards compatibility, after all, and the only way for you to play it on PlayStation is through the PS3.

“We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot,” Yasuda explained (via IGN). “As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games, and decided to develop a remake. Our goal is to make it easier for games who want to play Lollipop Chainsaw to do so. Please look forward to the game’s 2023 release.”

Back when the game was released in 2012, it was met with mostly middling reviews. That said, the game quickly earned itself a cult following and a remake could spell a different future for the series. We’ve talked before about how we’d like to have seen a sequel to Lollipop Chainsaw and not a remake, but considering how popular remakes are right now, we can’t say we’re surprised to see this is the route being taken for the game.

Lollipop Chainsaw will release sometime in 2023. The platforms for the game has not yet been announced.
