LGBTQ Films Coming Out in 2022
2021 gave us the first-ever big-screen gay superhero and queer couple in Eternals, and it also gifted us with the adaptation of one of the UK’s most beloved gay musicals, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. Is there enough representation? No, not really but we move on. LGBTQ representation in the films industry is getting bigger and bigger as time goes on, with 2022 providing queer creatives with even more opportunities. It also looks like Hollywood is beginning to realise that there are non-heterosexual actors who can indeed act in non-heterosexual roles. (Crazy, isn’t it?)
It’s becoming increasingly easier for queer people to watch a movie and see someone similar to them, providing them with all-important validation. Young or old, out or not, it’s paramount that queer people are represented in mainstream media. Mostly due to the ‘gay best friend’ movie stereotype being inordinately outdated and unbelievable. As Trixie Mattel once said, “I prefer when the gay people are monsters.”
That being said, there are lots of LGBTQ stories from both fiction and history that need to be told. 2022 has a few great historical and historical-inspired movies that do just that. Great Freedom tells the story of an imprisoned gay soldier during Nazi Germany, whilst I Wanna Dance With Somebody details the life of Whitney Houston, including her romantic relationship with Robyn Crawford. So suffice to say, 2022 is the year for a bit of a history lesson. But don’t worry, Fire Island, starring Margaret Cho and Bowen Yang will ensure there are laughs along the way.
We should state that this isn’t a completed list by any means, nor is it a list that will always have ‘positive’ representation because, to be frank, we weirdly weren’t asked to attend every premiere on this list (yet) so we are yet to watch them all.
We will more than likely have even missed a few movies out. So, we’re counting on you, our lovely readers and movie fans, to let us know if we’ve missed out on anything – email us at hello@gaymingmag.com
These LGBTQ movies coming out in 2022 will be categorized by month of release, or if a date hasn’t been issued, will be under the category TBD. The IMDB link is provided where possible, as well as the name of the Director(s).
If any movie included in the list is delayed and/or canceled, we will also update this list to show that.
