Squid Game Season 2 confirmed by creator
Squid Game Season 2 has been confirmed to be ‘in progress’ by creator, writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk.
In a video posted by AP Entertainment, Dong-hyuk appears alongside Lee Jung-jae, the lead actor who played Gi-Hun. In the video, Dong-hyuk confirms that Squid Game Season 2 is on the way, fuelled by the love and passion that fans of the series has shown the show since it arrived on Netflix back in September this year. It has yet to be kicked out of the Top 10 spot.
“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!” Dong-hyuk explains. “But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now, I’m in the planning process currently.”
The director also states that he thought it was too early to say when and how Squid Game Season 2 will happen, but that he does promise Gi-Hun will come back and his adventure will continue.
Squid Game follows the same structure seen in Battle Royale: a huge group of people come together and must take part in deadly games in order to see who is the last one standing. For Squid Game, the reason for these people coming together are because they are in a huge amount of debt, and the games revealed are childhood games. However, these games have a lethal twist that will leave contestants dropping like flies. And unlike in video games like Fortnite, you won’t be getting back up if you lose.
Season 1 ended on a cliff-hanger, with Gi-Hun winning the cash prize at the cost of his friends and loved ones and having to deal with the guilt of that. He eventually turns around and plans to lead a good life, leaving the money to people he knows needs it as well as visiting his daughter in the States, but one last encounter with the salesman who initiated him into the games in the first place gives the man a change of heart. The last we see of Gi-Hun, he is racing off the plane to try and find a way to prevent the games from happening once again.
What can we expect from Squid Game Season 2 is anyone’s guess, but considering that it’s only in the early planning stage at the moment, we’ve got plenty of time to speculate.
