Zen: A Gay Sequel is about being gay, coming out, and making friends

Zen: A Gay Sequel – also known as ZAGS – is the sequel to the 2019 game Yearning: A Gay Story. Created by developer bobcgames, the Zen and Yearning games put players in the setting of college, a setting that often conveys some pretty dramatic and emotional times in people’s lives. The only difference is that this game focuses more on being a gay man in this setting, both with struggles and moments of joy.

As the title suggests, Zen: A Gay Sequel is probably best played after completing the original game, but if you’d rather just head on in and get started then there’s a quick run-down of the previous game. You play as a gay guy who started his freshman year in college, you studied hard (or not, depending on your choices) and you made some new friends. You even got the chance to have a boyfriend. It’s all pretty damn cute. Got all that? Good.

Now the sequel doesn’t change that particular format all that much. The game page and overview describes ZAGS as a “gay, planner-focused, stat-based, dating sim set in college” after all. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing though, why fix something that ain’t broke, especially when it’s got a community that likes the previous game enough that there’s a sequel to it? Makes sense if you ask us!

ZAGS will still have something that makes it stand out, though. For example, the sequel has over 10,000+ more words than the original – which was already pretty beefy at 230k words – and there is a selection of minigames, four and a half different routes, and a ton of side stories for you to get stuck into.

Other features that players have to look forward to in-game is:

  • 24 CGs and 13 bonus images
  • 12 optional (and replayable) minigames
  • Four (and a half) full routes, plus side stories
  • Unlockable extras such as development notes and lyric videos

Zen: A Gay Sequel is out now on Steam and itch.io
