Legendary Pokémon Yveltal can now be tamed in Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go has introduced the legendary Pokémon Yveltal in its latest update, with the mighty monster now appearing in five-star raids in-game.

Yveltal, a dual dark and flying-type Pokémon, appears as part of the game’s ongoing ‘Luminous Legends’ event, which previously introduced the fabulous fairy-type legendary, Xerneas. Both creatures first appeared in 2013’s Pokémon X and Y on the Nintendo 3DS, where they were the mascot Pokémon and cover stars of their respective versions.

Yveltal is described as having been “first discovered in the Kalos region, and when its wings and tail feathers spread wide and glow red, it absorbs the life force of living creatures”, which frankly is an absolute mood.

Yveltal isn’t the only new Pokémon making its Pokémon Go debut – fan-favourite angry panda Pancham, a dark and fighting-type, will be hatching from ‘Strange Eggs’. Unfortunately, these eggs are hard to come by – players will need to defeat six Team GO Rocket grunts, assemble a Rocket Radar, track down a Team GO Rocket Leader (Sierra, Arlo, or Cliff), defeat them, and then have space to carry an extra egg. Players then need to walk 12km to hatch the egg – and even then, other Pokémon besides Pancham may hatch from it.

Other features coming to Pokémon Go as part of the Luminous Legends Y event include dark-type Pokémon appearing more frequently in the wild (which may be beneficial to any players still trying to complete the previous ‘All-in-One #151’ quest to unlock a Shiny Mew, as catching 30 of each elemental Pokémon type was a requirement), new Augmented Reality Mapping tasks, and a seven-stage set of timed research tasks that will lead to encounters with rarer Pokémon, such as the Galarian form of Zigzagoon, introduced in Nintendo Switch’s Pokémon Sword and Shield.

The biggest challenge is one for the whole player community though – if the total Pokémon Go player base defeats 25 million Team GO Rocket Grunts by 11:59pm UTC on Sunday 23 May, the a triple experience points bonus when catching Pokémon will be unlocked from 10:00am 25 May until 8:00pm 31 May (based on a player’s local times).

The real bonus here though is that it also unlocks the chance to catch a Shiny Galarian Zigagoon. The candy cane critter is impressive enough on its own, but its evolution into an outrageously colourful version of Obstagoon – normally a giant weasel with hard rock-style stage make-up and armour, its Shiny form is more drag queen than KISS!

Part one of the Yveltal event (Ylvental, maybe?) is live in-game from 10:00am local time today, until 8:00pm local time 24 May. Part two kicks in from Tuesday 25 May, with a return of more fairy-type Pokémon, and the long-awaited addition of Sylveon, Eevee’s fairy evolution, to Pokémon Go.
