Streamer Spotlight

Streamer Spotlight: QueerGod

Welcome to a new Streamer Spotlight where this time, the spotlight falls on QueerGod!

QueerGod is a variety streamer on Twitch who’s stream is fabulous and they love to give back to their community.

I sat down with QueerGod for a chat about their stream life, their life off-stream and how it all began.

Robin: When and why did you start streaming?

I started streaming March 21st, 2020 because I started feeling depressed. I used to post a lot of YouTube videos, but had to stop during the last year of undergrad because I couldn’t keep up with editing. I’ve always been passionate about content creating so when I stopped I didn’t feel like me anymore. My friend who’s been on Twitch encouraged me to start streaming. I took his advice and saved up for a brand new laptop then began my streaming journey.

What games do you prefer to stream?

The game I love to stream most is Apex Legends. I’ve found a wonderful community from this game and I’d have to say this is thanks to how inclusive the game is itself. Respawn has included LGBTQ+ legends that has helped many of us be seen in shooter games.

What can people expect from your stream?

I’m a variety streamer so you can definitely expect a wide range of things from my streams such as gaming, tarot readings, painting, and tournaments. One thing that you can find similar across the different types of streams I have is engagement. I’m geared towards creating content that allows for viewers to be involved. Whether it’s reading a viewer’s tarot cards, painting something for them, or just playing a game with them. I also really enjoy doing giveaways as a way to give back to my community.

How do you find being an out LGBT streamer?

Being an out LGBT streamer definitely has some pros and cons. I love meeting other LGBT streamers and connecting with others who relate. On the downside I have experienced hateful comments as well as being spam bot followed for being LGBT.

What’s your main goal as a streamer for the future?

Of course, a goal is to be partnered, but my main goal is to increase the amount I am currently giving back to the community. This could be through giveaways, hosting events, connecting others together, or simply getting to know people beyond just what I read in chat.

What do you enjoy the most about streaming?

When streaming I really enjoy connecting with others the most. I love the community I have built and having the ability to positively impact others lives. Whether it’s as simple as giving guidance through tarot readings or just running a few games of APEX with them.

What have you learned about yourself through streaming?

I learned that I have the ability to inspire others no matter how “big” I may or may not be. That my words and actions have an impact. Any advice, favor, or gesture can be huge for someone out there. I’m constantly finding new ways to help others and give back to them the support they give me. Many times I feel like I am not doing enough, but the little things go a long way.

What would you say to someone who wants to get into streaming?

I would tell them to take that risk! Many people can be unsure about streaming because they don’t know if they’ll be good at it, but they won’t know till they try. It’s also a learning experience so I don’t believe you need to know everything on how to be a streamer before starting. After a year of streaming, I’m still learning myself.

You were nominated for LGBTQ Streamer of the Year at the Gayming Awards this year, how did it feel when you found out?

I was honestly very honored and in a state of disbelief. I was nominated for a GameHers award for Best Gaming Community and my community was super excited. After I didn’t win they continued to look for new awards that may suit me and found The Gayming Awards! They really believe in me and they all help me see my worth. Being nominated for LGBTQ streamer of the year helped me truly see the power of my community.

What do you do for a day job?

Aside from streaming I work as a Vet Assistant and I’m in Graduate school. If I’m being honest juggling all of this is very difficult and I constantly burn myself out. The plan was to quit my job once I became a partner, but I am starting to realize my mental health is at cost. There is a chance I will soon only be focusing on my schooling and streaming.

What hobbies do you enjoy doing away from video games?

Away from video games I really enjoy photography and video editing. It’s been a hobby of mine for 10+ years. Photo editing and video editing is very soothing to me not just for content creation, but also because the process of editing is very satisfying. I did end up getting my Bachelors in Digital Arts which helped me further my skills and expand on my creativity.

What’s the game that defined your childhood?

One of the first games I ever recall playing was Freddi Fish, but I’d say the game that defined my childhood was Mario Kart Double Dash. My siblings, cousins, and I would always play Mario games together. It was such a great bonding time although we’d all get a little too competitive sometimes. There were days that the only way we’d get along was throughout video games.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

This year I am looking forward to trying out new content and expanding myself as a variety streamer. I’m also hoping to finally begin the process of starting an online LGBTQ+ clothing site. I’m currently in the process of starting a podcast with my partner which will be recorded live on Twitch and posted on YouTube after. The podcast is called OhHowQueer and will involve LGBTQ+ topics. Lastly, I look forward to meeting new people on Twitch and collabing with other creators.
