Sapphic roguelike Sword of the Necromancer gets free DLC in June

Sword of the Necromancer quickly became one of our favourite games this year so you just know that we’re going to be wanting some DLC. Especially with the game showcasing the epic love story between Tama and Koko, as well as the fun, inventive dungeons and enemies that we went through to get those lovebirds back together. We need more.

As it turns out, Grimorio of Games are here to answer that need. In their latest update on their Kickstarter, the developers explained what players could expect from the new DLC when it officially released.

Once you’ve completed the base game, and as such got the true ending of Sword of the Necromancer, you’ll be able to unlock the door at the upper right of the altar area. This is the area where you spawn in when you start the game, or if you’ve previously died, so you can’t miss it.

Once players go through that area, you’ll be taken to a main menu with 5 new options – all which come with some new artwork too. We love to see it. These five new options are:

  • Challenge Mode: Exactly what it says on the tin. In Challenge Mode, you’ll basically be playing the base game, but things will be even more randomized than usual. There will be 10 new monsters, as well as new bosses that won’t be in a fixed order. No matter where you go, you’ll encounter something new in this mode.
  • Colosseum Mode: You think you can take on waves after waves of enemies? Then you’ll love the Colosseum Mode. Here players must defeat enemy after enemy until they get to the end, where a random boss awaits to destroy them.
  • Boss Rush: Players will have to fight against 5 bosses without rest! You’ll encounter both old and new enemies and can only bring your level and gear to face them. So, we suggest grinding first! If you manage to defeat this mode, you’ll even get your own mini-boss to summon in the base game!
  • Dungeon Builder: What’s better than exploring a dungeon? Making your own! You can create the layout of your dungeon, decide what you want to appear in chests, enemies, and even boss battles. You can then share these dungeons with a simple text code. Sounds neat!
  • Item Shop: After completing one of the other modes, you’ll be given a symbol that you can exchange for items. The item offered will be the same for everyone, but will change each day so that players have the chance to get all weapons and relics.

What’s really exciting about these new modes is that, once completed, you’ll be treated with new chapter – the Epilogue to Tama and Koko’s story, and you just know how invested we are in finding out about that!

All of these DLC game modes will be available sometime in June, which is also when physical editions of Sword of the Necromancer for Kickstarter backers will be released. We will update this article the moment we have a solid date, but until then, we’ll just have to keep on playing!
