Crusader Kings 3’s latest update breaks same-sex mods

Crusader Kings 3 is a fun, if somewhat uncomfortable game about creating a dynasty, and ending others if you put your mind to it. Despite this very rigid outlook, and the fact there’s no gay marriage or same-sex allowed within the base game, modders have tried their best to make Crusader Kings 3 more inclusive.

One such mod is the same-sex concubine mod, created by user Jesper. This mod allowed same-sex concubines to be added, as currently the only concubines you’re allowed to have been the opposite sex. This goes for both men and women in Crusader Kings 3. As we’ve stated before, this game sadly does not understand the need for players wanting a gay family.

However, due to a patch that Paradox Interactive dropped last Monday, this mod and any other same-sex relationship mod in Crusader Kings 3 have been completely demolished in the process.

If you try and use the same-sex concubine mod now, you’ll get the following error message:

“Error: make_concubine effect [ Illegal concubinage: is the same gender as their concubinist, so they can’t become a concubine ]”.

While Crusader Kings 3 hasn’t been the absolute worst at including same-sex relationships, it’s incredibly disheartening to see that mods like this are being made defunct. However, according to Paradox Interactive’s statement Rock Paper Shotgun, while it was indeed the developer’s intention to make this change, it wasn’t out of malice.

“The change, in this case, was part of a set of fixes around concubine-related behaviors in the game, leading to buggy outcomes like concubines being assigned to dead people,” they told Rock Paper Shotgun. “In no way was this implemented in order to deliberately bar players from including same-sex relationships in the game.”

The team at Paradox also stated that they “are very conscious of representation in [their] games,” and how much it means to players. They are looking into a way to fix this defunct mod, however fixing mods – according to a programmer on the game’s official forums – is “very low” on the priority list.

Ultimately, the only suggestion we have is perhaps something that may seem almost radical. And that is: add concubines and gay marriage to the default game? We can’t know for sure if Paradox will ever do just that, but it’d sure be a nice change to have.
