Overwatch hero Tracer and her girlfriend take the spotlight in London Calling #2

Overwatch hero Tracer’s comic book adventures continue this week, with the digital release of Tracer: London Calling #2 – and LGBTQ+ fans will be pleased to see her relationship with girlfriend Emily gets more page time.

The story picks up from the first issue, with time-manipulating speedster Tracer trying to help an underground community of Omnics, sentient robots central to Overwatch’s lore but now struggling to find the resources they need to survive. Guided by her friendship with Iggy, an Omnic who shares her love of classic punk and rock music, Tracer is drawn into guarding Mondatta, the Omnics’ spiritual leader, as he prepares to make a speech preaching peace and coexistence with humans.

However, not everyone is on board with Mondatta’s goals. The anti-human Kace stirs discontent among the Omnics, while sniper Widowmaker (another playable character in Overwatch) makes an assassination attempt on the gentle Mondatta, leading to the issue’s best action sequence – a thrilling seven-page battle with Tracer, brilliantly executed by artist Babs Tarr.

Writer Mariko Tamaki also delivers some more of Tracer’s backstory, delivering some hints on her origin and powers, and her earliest days as an Overwatch operative. There are also plenty of nods for fans of the game, such as genius gorilla Winston sending Tracer a package under the pseudonym “S. Paceape”.

Best of all is the continued presence of Emily, Tracer’s girlfriend, and more hints of their home life. It’s a touching, healthy, and supportive relationship, and adds some much needed grounding to Tracer’s chaotic, weird life. Hopefully, we’ll see more of this going forward.

You can read London Calling #2 at PlayOverwatch for free now, while Dark Horse Comics will be publishing the series physically from December.
