Can You Be Gay in Pyre?

Supergiant Games recently released Hades, a roguelike that has already hit the 1 million mark. And while we’ll be covering Hades – and whether you can be gay in the game or not – we’ve decided to turn our gaze onto Pyre and how that game handles LGBT+ representation.

And well, it isn’t anything to go home about. However, one of the merits of Pyre is that it lets you choose your pronouns. Considering that the game originally came out in 2017, that’s quite an accomplishment even from a 2020 perspective – where pronouns and the use of them still cause heated debates both online and offline.

Unfortunately, that’s where it all goes downhill for Pyre as it suffers from the dreaded ‘playersexual’ romance in regards to characters like Jodariel, a huge, horned woman who you can express your attraction to – regardless of the pronouns you choose – and fall in love with Sandra The Unseeing – a wraith. While on the surface this isn’t much of an issue, the game never goes out of its way to define the sexuality of these characters – giving players the room to not even know of Jodariel and Sandra’s bisexuality in the first place.

Greg Kasavin, writer and designer for Supergiant Games, has previously explained that “he doesn’t typically label the sexual orientations of characters in their games” – something which, if you ask us, makes the representation in Pyre even more disappointing.

So, can you be gay in Pyre? The answer is yes, but only if you choose to set your sights on Sandra the Unseeing and/or Jodariel.
