WWE invites you to participate in Battlegrounds this Fall

If buff men in speedos and powerful female divas are found in your interest groups, then you’ll only have to wait until Fall 2020 to get your hands on a video game with both kinds of athletes involved. Last week it was announced that the latest wrestling title, WWE 2K Battlegrounds, is getting ready to roll out in Q4 of 2020.

Contrary to popular belief, WWE 2K Battlegrounds was not greenlit due to the disaster that is WWE 2K20. It’s only been seven months since the latter title was released, and really just six months since it went down in flames. That’s not nearly enough time for Visual Concepts, Battlegrounds’ developer, to get as far as to show off a teaser trailer; which I have included at the bottom of this post.

A spokesman for Visual Concepts told Polygon: “We are applying what we’ve learned to the next WWE 2K simulation game with a renewed focus on quality and fun. We want to ensure the development team at Visual Concepts can create a great game that will entertain grizzled WWE 2K veterans, as well as newcomers who want to climb through the ropes and step into the ring for the very first time.”

411Mania spoke further on Battlegrounds by saying, “This is an arcade-style fighting game in which players engage in wrestling matches using custom characters and WWE Superstars. Characters punch, kick, and throw each other during matches; players can also attack opponents by using chairs, poles, alligators, exploding barrels, and falling cars. Matches are depicted in a somewhat exaggerated cartoon style—highlighted by impact sounds, slow-motion effects, and occasional explosions. In one sequence, wrestlers climb and are shocked by an electrified cage while grabbing bags of cash. Some female wrestlers wear outfits that expose moderate amounts of cleavage and/or buttocks.”

So far, only Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, John Cena, Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock are confirmed to appear in the game. Although it’s fathomable that most of WWE’s locker-room, both past and present, will be available as playable characters.

Find WWE 2K Battlegrounds on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch this Fall. It looks like a Celebrity Deathmatch spin-off, so I’m in!

***It’s important to note that current wrestlers Sonya DeVille and Jake Atlas identify as gay, and WWE Backstage co-host Paige identifies as bisexual. Their inclusion in this game gives a face to queer talent in the wrestling business and in digital media like video games.
