There Will Be No Online E3 2020 Event in June

The cancellation of E3 2020 was a major blow for a lot of people. Developers and publishers were left wondering what would come next for what they had to show. Some moved towards holding their own online E3 events, somewhat like ‘Nintendo Directs’, which would show players what new games they could expect to be playing.

That begged the question of what was the point of holding an online E3 if publishers were clearly capable of hosting their own events themselves? Also, what would be the point of E3 in general if that was the case? After all, the ESA, E3’s organizer, have been treading on thin ice since they leaked over 2000 journalists and analysts data last year.

With that in mind, the news (via PC Gamer) that there will be no online E3 experience this year, is hardly surprising.

According to PC Gamer, an ESA spokesperson said the following was the reason behind this decision:

“Given the disruption brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, we will not be presenting an online E3 2020 event in June. Instead, we will be working with exhibitors to promote and showcase individual company announcements, including on www.E3expo.com, in the coming months.” They continued, “we look forward to bringing our industry and community together in 2021 to present a reimagined E3 that will highlight new offerings and thrill our audiences.”

If there are any changes made to this year’s E3, we’ll be sure to update this article. Until then, we’ll just have to sit and hope that this global pandemic blows over before next year’s E3.
