The Suicide of Rachel Foster, an intense, The Shining-esque mystery game, is out today

Family values mean everything and nothing at the same time in this mysterious, mature game, The Suicide of Rachel Foster, from Daedalic Entertainment. We recently covered the game in our review, and deputy editor Aimee Hart thinks it’s possibly going to be her GOTY already.

But what is the game about? In it you play as a young woman named Nicole. Driven by her mother’s dying wish, she returns to her childhood home, the hotel Timberlane. What first starts as a simple collection of assets before the place is sold, instead turns into Nicole doing her best to uncover the hotel’s — and her family’s — dark secrets.

Nicole won’t be alone in her journey, however. While being trapped in the Timberlane because of a snowstorm, she’s at least got a friendly FEMA agent, Irving to keep her company. Though is he has good-natured as he appears? You’ll have to play to find out.

But be warned, the game may not exactly be for everyone as it explores some very dark, mature things that may leave players feeling both scared and distraught.

Developer, Daniel Azara at ONE-O-ONE GAMES says “The aim, when making ‘The Suicide of Rachel Foster’, was to inspire gamers to reflect on commonly neglected topics, like grief, love, and exasperation. Videogames are a powerful and reflective storytelling medium, and we want to use this platform to raise awareness regarding these topics, by including them as elements that add depth to our fictional narrative.”

While the game has been slated to release for PS4 and Xbox, the release today is only for PC. You can grab it for yourself for £14.99/€16.99 on Steam.
