Escape from Tarkov developer cites ‘huge amount of work’ as reason not to include female characters

Escape from Tarkov was originally released in 2016 by Battlestate Games, to a reception that was mostly positive but hardly groundbreaking. It’s a first person, online shooter where realism is key. Some of the reviews we’ve seen state that ‘this is not a game for the weak’.

The popularity of the game reached a spike recently, and alongside that popularity, people found a troublesome line of thinking from one of the representatives of Battlestate Games.

To sum it up, the reason why women characters were not included in Escape from Tarkov was due to ‘women being unable to handle that amount of stress’ that is present in the game. War, combat, and death are obvious features included, so we’re to believe that this is probably what the representative meant when the comments were made. Though that doesn’t make them remotely accurate. It doesn’t take a genius to know that women have partaken in war just as much as men, both in the present and in the past.

Regardless, Battlestate Games have released an official statement about their previous comments on Twitter.

It seems like a fairly decent response, but Battlestate Games are still unwilling to put female characters in Escape from Tarkov. The reason this time seems to be one that they got on loan from Ubisoft back in 2014.

“First — there are women in EFT already.” Battlestate Games said on Twitter, referring to main missions with female characters involved, as well as traders. “But there will be no playable female characters because of game lore and more importantly – the huge amount of work needed with animations, gear fitting, etc.”

While that’s certainly a reason right there, we’re not quite convinced that it’s justification for why female players aren’t considered to be a major part of the game in the same way as male players are. In 2020, the total disregard to female players is, in fact, quite concerning.
