Our favourite Christmas events in video games
Christmas is one of the best times of the year, and not just because of all the turkey you’re going to be eating, nor the egg nog you’re going to be drinking. Sometimes it’s actually because of the Christmas events in video games. You know what we’re talking about, right? Who doesn’t love a good in-game Christmas event.
No matter how small the event may be, it’s the inclusion of them that makes this time so special. Even with games that you may not have played for a long time, the promise of a special item always seems to win out and entice you back.
On a business level, it’s very shrewd marketing. But as gaymers, we’re more than willing to let it happen. But which Christmas events are our favourites? Well…
Runescape’s Winter Event
As a huge Runescape fan, this is most certainly Aimee’s pick. There’s nothing particularly glitzy about it, but we’re fond of the Winter events in Runescape being sequels to the last event. Of course, some of these events are completely separate, but we do love a thrilling saga!

Dead by Daylight Winter Solstice
Nothing quite says Christmas like being sacrificed to an Entity that feeds on your despair! In Dead by Daylight’s Christmas event, the maps that you usually have to traverse through in order to escape the wrath of a wrily killer, is now decorated with Christmas lights.
During this winter period, the music will also change to become a lot more festive than usual and you’ll also have the chance to earn special items that you can use during the event. That and there are a ton of ugly Christmas sweaters, because who doesn’t love an ugly, festive Christmas sweater?
Fallout 76’s Winter Event
No matter how you feel about Bethesda, you can’t deny that Fallout 76 has done a good job at fostering a community that loves to explore, build and kick ass together.
In this year’s winter event, players will be going up against holiday scorched enemies. These enemies will be wearing a few different pieces of Santa gear, and will drop the best presents: common to rare items.
If that doesn’t get you into the Christmas spirit though, maybe the Numskull Christmas jumper will.
Overwatch’s Winter Event
When we hear the words ‘Winter event’, our mind immediately goes to Overwatch. It may not be a game that we play as often as we used to, but it has a dedicated community still that comes together for most events. And unlike many games with a winter event, it doesn’t just add cosmetics, but new game modes too.
The first event is the Yeti Hunt, where you face off against one angry Winston as a team of Mei’s, and the second is Mei’s Snowball Fight mode where, as Mei, you fight against other Mei’s to try and get each other out with a snowball. It’s good fun and we heartily recommend it.
Those were our favourite Christmas events, but what are yours? Are there any coming out this year that we missed? Let us know in the comments below!
