R.I.P SingStar, we hardly knew ye

SingStar was the pinnacle for many of us dramatic gay disasters out there. There was nothing like grabbing that mic, picking Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ and then dancing wildly while thinking homoerotic thoughts about both Gaga and Alexander Skarsgard. Anything to give you that edge over the person you were singing against, am I right?

However, according to Pocket-Lint, that ship looks to have sailed as the karaoke game’s servers are being shut down in December 2020. While SingStar didn’t have a ‘real’ game on the PS4, it did have an app and one that was still used whenever anyone wanted to embarrass themselves in front of friends.

There doesn’t seem to be any reason for it, but considering that the PlayStation 5 is going to be out soon, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to theorise the possibility of it moving onto that console. Yet regardless of intentions, we’re more than a little sad at saying goodbye to such a classic game that often had hilarious results.

But not all is lost. Those who own the physical edition of SingStar will still be able to play the game, as well as keep all of their songs that they bought during the game’s run. The shutdown of SingStar will only affect features that used the game’s servers, such as being able to share your singing talent on social media like Facebook and Twitter.

Players will still be able to engage in fun modes too, such as Party Mode, which lets everyone sing together and ranks your score. The only real difference is that everything will be offline, so you’ll have to actually drag your friends on over to your house to play. A hassle maybe, but definitely not impossible.

Still, it’s a shame that online play, arguably one of the strongest parts about SingStar, has been taken away. We can only hope that the game will appear once again on the PS5.
