Pokemon Sword and Shield sales hit 6 million after only one week

With all the controversy that has followed Pokemon Sword and Shield over the National Dex, as well as the yet-to-be-confirmed reused animations, you would have expected some blowback. Only, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as Pokemon Sword and Shield sales have hit 6 million after only one week.

This news comes after the Pokemon Company announced, via PDF, that the games had sold over 6 million units globally, with 2 million being just in Japan. Given Pokemon’s popularity in Japan, this doesn’t surprise us too much, but we’re amazed at the positive reception outside of the East too.

What’s more, according to Daniel Ahmad, senior analyst at Niko Partners, this means that Sword and Shield have beaten the Pokemon Let’s Go series, which only sold 3 million in its first week. It’s even beaten Smash Bros. Ultimate, which sold 5 million.

Pokemon Sword and Shield sales

This is particularly interesting, as the outrage over the national Dex seemed to be overwhelming enough that some players even turned to Donald Trump for help.

However, if these sales are any indication, it seems that the outrage against Game Freak has done nothing to affect the Pokemon Sword and Shield sales. It could even be argued that, perhaps, the outcry had only driven more and more people to give the games another go.

Regardless of the reason, it goes to show how social media can really be the outlier when it comes to a community of players.
