Devolver Digital accuses self-care app of plagiarism

Imitation is considered the highest form of flattery, but plagiarism is no joke. In fact, plagiarism is one of the lowest things a person can do, as it rips off another person’s hard work to pass it as something of your own. So it’s no surprise that Devolver Digital have hit back at a self-care app for their own plagiarist deeds.

The app is called The Fabulous, and uses art and backgrounds that are very, very similar to that of GRIS, a game that Devolver Digital has published. In GRIS, you play as a young girl in a world that is coloured with her sorrow and grief. She eventually grows stronger, which is seen through the changing of her dress and the reveal of new paths that she can take.

It’s a game that is beloved by man, and has been rated highly with Nintendo Life giving it a 9/10 score. It’s a mystery then, how this self-care app thought that it could possibly get away with including art, as well as animation, that is so obviously ripped from the game. All you need is just one look at Devolver Digital’s tweet to see that.

However, The Fabulous’ CEO Sami Ben Hassine, has spoken out about this to Gamasutra. He stated the following:

“Fabulous has a mission to help people lead healthier lives, and we started this 5 years ago. From the very beginning, and as we are gamers ourselves, we were inspired by games like Journey, Monument Valley, and books like the Little Prince or The Alchemist, to create our universe.” Hassine said over email. “We have a team of 2 artists and freelancers, and that video was created a few months ago. We’re still investigating this as all of this has been sudden, but any wrongdoing from our side is not intentional. It might be that one of our artists or freelancers got inspired by a game that they liked.”

An awfully convenient response if you ask us, and one that doesn’t necessarily answer Devolver Digital’s accusation of plagiarism. As for now, we’ll keep an eye on this story for more updates.
