Cosplay of Mei’s Overwatch supporting Hong Kong has surfaced online
Overwatch may just have a new hero.
It’s only been a few days since Blitzchung, a popular pro-Hearthstone player, was removed from Grandmasters after calling for the liberation of Hong Kong. Since then, things have only spiraled out of control for Blizzard with fans using their IPs such as Overwatch and World of Warcraft to let them know of their displeasure.
Yet, despite Blizzard’s deafening silence, it only looks to be the beginning of the mass protest against the company.
Only yesterday did we report about Overwatch’s Mei being photoshopped by Redditors to include pictures and banners with the words ‘Free Hong Kong’ plastered on them. However, thanks to Kotaku we now know some are taking it a step further.
In a post that reads “Was gonna burn this cosplay, but this is a much better use of it. #MeiSupportsHongKong”, redditor Zephronica posted the following image:
They also included another image, which you can see on the original post, with the same maple leaf included in the ‘Free Hong Kong’ sign. For those who are curious, this is because Zephronica is posting from Canada.
Since her posting of this cosplay, she’s been an understandable big hit and in a recent post in the Protest Blizzcon reddit, she had this to say:
“Hi everyone, I am the Mei cosplayer that posted in r/HongKong. I made my post only as a small part of a larger movement, and did not think it was going to blow up like this. My family came from Hong Kong and I have family back there fighting for their freedom, so this is a very personal fight. Thank you all so much for all of your support.”
Whether others will follow Zephronica’s example is unknown, but considering how unspoken communities have been against Blizzard since their firing of two casters and removal of Blitzchung, we wouldn’t be at all surprised if other cosplayers picked up the mantle.
