5 Underrated Horror Games you need to play this Halloween

It’s spooky season, which means you’re going to want to spend your time playing video games that bring out the Halloween spirit in you. Of course, you could play games that everyone knows. Silent Hill, Resident Evil, P.T, Man of Medan… But why not invest your time in some underrated horror games you’ve never heard of before?

Of course, some of these underrated horrors are hard to get nowadays being that they’re from the PS2-era or just don’t exist anywhere anymore outside of YouTube ‘Let’s Plays’.

But don’t fret. While you may not be able to play the game you’ve been looking for, you can always end up watching it like a movie. For those who like horror games, but don’t want to actually play them, this is for you.

Clock Tower 3 (PS2)

underrated horror games

It’s nothing short of a crime that Clock Tower 3 hasn’t been either remade or remastered. It tells the story of Alyssa Hamilton, a young girl who was sent to a boarding school by her mother for her protection.

Despite being told not to, Alyssa comes home to find her mother missing and herself trapped in a world where the denizens are more than happy to end her life.

This game is hard to find, but the whole game can be watched on YouTube and it is full of spine-chilling thrills that’ll make you regret watching it at night. Trust us, don’t watch with the lights off.

Detention (Switch, PS4, PC, and Mobile)

Set in 1960’s Taiwan, Detention is one of the most atmospheric horror games I’ve ever had the misfortune to play. It’s a 2D side-scroller, and puts you in the shoes of two high school students who are trapped in their school.

While that setting alone is enough to scare any student, current and former, it gets even worse when the two of them find out that the school they’re trapped in is haunted by evil creatures that are out to get them.

Including a beautiful score, as well as references to East Asian culture, Detention is a horror game that deserves way more credit than it gets. Give it a try, then let us know what you think!

Haunting Ground (PS2)

Haunting Ground is my favourite horror game and is criminally underrated. In it, you play as Fiona Belli, a woman who has the worst luck in the world. Her car crashes in the middle of the night and she wakes up in a castle where escape seems impossible. Oh, and everyone wants to rip the womb from her body.

Yeah, it’s not easy being Fiona.

But there are some perks, as while she may seem alone, she eventually finds a friend in a dog called Hewie. Hewie is Fiona’s only solace in this hell, and both of them must work together in order to escape.

There are a number of different endings for Haunting Ground and it is actually available to buy on Amazon, so get cracking horror gaymers! You don’t want to miss out on one of the best horror games around.

Ao Oni (PC)

Yes, I know what you’re thinking. How on earth could what looks to be a few purple blobs with legs be terrifying? But trust me on this, Ao Oni is a role-playing horror game that is so interesting, along with being horrifying, that you’ll quickly want to know more about it after playing.

The premise is a simple one. You play as a boy called Hiroshi who, along with his friends, gets trapped in a haunted mansion after breaking in to explore it. One by one they start to disappear, leaving Hiroshi on his own to come face to face with the Oni. A purple demon that chases him throughout the game.

The game was very well-received by horror enthusiasts, especially in Japan, and has actually had live-action movies dedicated to it, as well as an anime.

Faith (PC)

underrated horror games

Faith may not be as graphically beautiful as Haunting Ground or even Clock Tower, but it tells a story that combines religion, demonic possession, and the written word to make a game that’ll be on your mind long after you put the game down.

The long and short of it is that you play as John Ward who is returning to the Martin’s house to investigate it. The details on why you’re doing this is fairly sparse, as the main objective is to undercover why John is there in the first place.

It’s an incredible game, completely free and is downright spooky. If there is one game you should play out of this list, Faith definitely sits at number one.
