Sony, Microsoft, and others join forces with the United Nations to help combat climate change with ‘Playing for the Planet’ initiative

Gaymers, it is no secret that our planet isn’t as stable as it once was. However, video game industry companies such as Sony, Microsoft, Ubisoft, and Google Stadia, have come forward to announce that they would be joining the Playing for the Planet initiative.

Playing for the Planet is an initiative that was formed under the United Nations, and whose goal is anything but simple: to help combat climate change. They’ve already strived in their efforts to achieve its sustainable development goals this century, limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. The question isn’t whether it’ll be enough however, but how much damage we can reverse by 2100.

Regardless, with the United Nations bringing this initiative into play, as well as Sony, Microsoft, Stadia and Ubisoft joining in to help, it’s obvious this a step in the right direction.

According to the United Nations official post, the “commitment from these 21 companies will result in a 30 million tonne reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030, will see millions of trees planted, new “green nudges” in game design and improvements to energy management, packaging, and device recycling.”

Outside of the companies mentioned above, Rovio, Supercell, Sybo, and WildWorks were also mentioned to be a part of the Playing for the Planet initiative.

Sony CEO and President, Jim Ryan, spoke up at the UN Climate Summit. He said, “At PlayStation, we believe games have the power to ignite social change through educating people, evoking emotions, and inspiring hope. We could not be prouder to be part of the Playing for the Planet Alliance and we look forward to seeing what the industry can achieve together.”

He was joined by Phil Spencer, the executive vice president of Microsoft. “Climate change is impacting each industry and every sector, and we believe technology can play a critical role in enabling and empowering the response to this challenge.

Initiatives like our Minecraft Build a Better World Campaign and CarbonNeutral Xbox pilot provide a great opportunity to tap into Microsoft’s technology sustainability and gaming community to make a difference in this key area of our business.”
